Diagnostics
A car diagnostic check reads the fault codes stored by your car’s computer systems, then uses those codes, along with hands-on testing, to find out why a warning light has come on or why the car isn’t running properly.
At Lamberts Garage Service Centre, we carry out diagnostics with Bosch KTS and Topdon equipment, giving us access to the systems on most modern makes and models.
Most people come to us because something on the dashboard has lit up, but plenty of faults show themselves in other ways. It’s worth booking a check if:
If the engine management light is flashing rather than steady, the fault could be causing damage as you drive. Pull over when it’s safe and give us a call.
A fault code tells you which system has spotted a problem, but it rarely tells you exactly which part has failed. A misfire code, for example, could point to a spark plug, an ignition coil, an injector, or a wiring fault.
Our technicians treat the code as a starting point. Bosch KTS lets us read live data from the engine, gearbox, brakes, and body electronics, so we can watch how components behave while the car is running. Topdon adds broad vehicle coverage and further testing functions. Between them, we can narrow down the cause before recommending parts, which saves you paying for replacements that don’t solve anything.
Once we’ve found the fault, we’ll explain it clearly and give you a price for the repair. Nothing goes ahead without your approval.
On modern cars, fitting a new part is often only half the job. Some components have to be coded to the car, calibrated, or reset before they’ll work correctly. Our equipment handles this in-house, including battery registration, electronic parking brake modes, and service indicator resets.
As a Bosch Car Service centre, our technicians are trained to Bosch standards and work with Bosch’s own diagnostic system. That experience counts most with intermittent faults, the kind that come and go and can be hard to pin down. We’ve been tracing faults on Fords since 1951, and we bring the same care to every make that comes into our Leven workshop.
The cost depends on the fault and how long it takes to trace. We’ll confirm the price of the initial check before we start, and if a repair is needed, we’ll quote for it separately so you can decide.
If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually get it to us, but book in soon, because a minor fault can develop into a bigger one. A flashing light, or a light combined with loss of power, unusual noises, or smoke, means you should stop driving and call us.
It will find faults the car’s systems have recorded, and our technicians trace the problem from there. Some mechanical issues, such as worn suspension, don’t register electronically, so we’ll also inspect the car physically if the symptoms point that way.
We can, once the underlying fault is fixed. Clearing a code without a repair only switches the light off temporarily, so we’ll always find the cause first.
Straightforward faults can often be found the same day, while intermittent problems may take longer. If your car needs to stay with us, a courtesy car or our free collection and delivery service can keep your day on track.
As an approved Bosch Car Service centre, Lamberts Garage Service Centre is independently owned but proud to work to Bosch’s standards for workmanship, training, and customer care. Whatever your car needs, you can book with the confidence that one of the world’s most trusted names in automotive engineering stands behind our workshop.
